Russia’s New Choreographic Voices of the 21^st Century:  Ksenia Zvereva, Olga Vasilieva, Vladimir Varnava, Ilia Zhivoi, Maxim Petrov, Yuri Smekalov, and Emil Faski. After the decades long choreographic dominance of the living legend Yury Grigorovitch, a different type of Russian choreographer who danced and began choreographing mostly abroad, stormed the world stage in the face of today’s well-established dance makers -- Yuri Possokhov and Alexei Ratmansky.

After the first decade of the 21^st century and with the stabilization of the Russian economy and political climate, a new breed of young Russian chorographers is rising with vigor, confidence and originality. Meet the New Generation:

Ksenia Zvereva: Winner of many prizes, such as the Stora Daldansen international ballet competition and IFMC international competition, Zvereva received a diploma at the Runway Youth Festival of Contemporary Choreography.  She was a dancer with the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus.  Her work has been presented with Cullberg Ballet, Mariinsky Theatre, Royal Swedish Opera Foundation and Astana Opera.

Olga Vasilieva: Winner of the competition of young choreographers at the Contemporary Dance Festival Context and competition Riga Spring, Vasilieva graduated from the Choreography Department of the Leningradskaya Oblast College of Culture and Arts.  She has created choreography for the production of The Captain’s Daughter at the Ulyanovsk Drama Theatre and performed in the productions by Lilia Burdinskaya, Alexander Lyubashin, Pedro Gomez, Mikko Lampinen and Maura Morales.

Vladimir Varnava: Recipient of the Golden Mask, Russia’s most prestigious theatre prize, Varnava graduated from the Khanty-Mansiysk branch of the Moscow State University of Culture and the Arts. He was a dancer with the Music Theatre of the Republic of Karelia, performing lead roles in classical and contemporary ballets. Varnava took an internship at the Carolyn Carlson Company and performed as a guest soloist at the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre and in Gap Filling at the Akhe Engineering Theatre.  He takes part in various projects and performances in Russia and abroad. He debuted as a choreographer in 2011, staging Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella at the Music Theatre of the Republic of Karelia.

Ilia Zhivoi: Ilya Zhivoi, a dancer with the Mariinsky Theatre and a regular participant in the Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers at the ballet festival Mariinsky, has been annually presenting new productions on his home stage since 2013. For the last season’s Creative Workshop, Zhivoi prepared the one-act “SeasonS” to music by Max Richter.

Maxim Petrov: Born in the village of Novolisino, Leningrad Region, Petrov graduated from the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in 2012 and joined the Mariinsky Ballet the same year.  In April 2014, as part of the Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers at the Mariinsky Theatre, Maxim Petrov presented the one-act ballet Cinéma to music by Erik Satie.

Yuri Smekalov: Prize-winner at the VII International Competition of the International Dance Council CID-UNESCO, Smekalov is a recipient of the Golden Mask.  Born in Nizhny Tagil, he graduated from the Vaganova Academy and danced with the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theatre of Boris Eifman and the Mariinsky Theatre.  His choreographic miniatures Requiem for Narcissus and Parting have been performed in Europe and Asia. Smekalov works with the coach Alexei Mishin and he is involved in creating programmes for Russia’s figure skating team.

Emil Faski: After graduating from the Vaganova Academy, Emil Faski became a soloist with the Leonid Yakobson State Ballet Theatre. Marie-Hélène Rebois, Director

Passionate about dance and movement, Marie Hélène Rebois films the work of the dancers on stage and in rehearsals. She makes documentary films about great choreographers and more particularly on the body's memory and the legacy of contemporary dance. She received the Beaumarchais Medal SACD for her work on contemporary artistic creation.  In the Steps of Trisha Brown received the Jury Prize at the International Film Festival on Art, Montreal 2017 FIFA. Over the past four decades, William Forsythe (born 1949) has created for himself a unique dance world, developing groundbreaking ballet choreographies, experimental dance pieces, digital dance scores and site-specific installations that unexpectedly turn viewers into performers themselves.
 

With The Fact of Matter, Forsythe marks the beginning of a new chapter in his choreographic oeuvre at a fitting location: an exhibition in a modern art museum, the MMK Frankfurt am Main. Featuring recent work by Forsythe (including a selection of performative objects, video installations and interactive environments) in dialogue with works from the museum’s collection, the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue investigate the threshold between the visual arts and choreography -- a line that Forsythe has explored continually in his work.
