PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS

A key element of the Dance ICONS, Inc. organization's mission is to provide the tools to support the advancement and prosperity of young and emerging choreographers in all possible formats and arrangements.

We’re committed to collaborating with other organizations to offer inter-institutional intensives, workshops, and seminars lasting one, two, or three weeks up to an entire season in nine months. We implement the ICON SMART ℠ algorithm to help choreographers with their creative research and organize their artistic processes. A short informational video about it is available here.

We offer artistic organizations the following two options and interactive formats to support their mission in developing choreographic talent. For support to nonmember organizations or more information, please contact our team at info@danceicons.org  about the following options below.

ICONICS - Intensive Choreographic Operations Nurturing & Inventive Creativity Seminars

The ICONICS format serves inter-institutional arrangements between Dance ICONS, Inc., and another institution. The seminars consist of intense classroom and in-studio learning and experimenting that rotates between Theory of Choreography sessions and Creative Laboratory sessions, which can last from 3 days up to 3 weeks. Theory of Choreography consists of daily lectures with PowerPoint demonstrations and video samples that introduce terminology in choreography. At the same time, the Creative Laboratory focuses on choreographic improvisation, creative exercises, mentorship, and practical training to refine choreographic skills. The seminars culminate in a short performance demonstrating the choreographers’ newly gained skills.

LEAP - Long-Term Enrichment and Advancement Program

The LEAP format serves inter-institutional arrangements between Dance ICONS, Inc., and another institution, which can be a dance or performing arts center, a university, or a professional dance company. The long-term and curriculum-based program incorporates theoretical and practical learning, creative laboratories, and rehearsals for producing original works. While ICONICS lasts 3 days to 3 weeks, the LEAP  program lasts 9 months and consists of 2 academic semesters: winter and spring.

A sample of this initiative, the ICONS Choreographic Institute, was established in 2016 in Washington, DC, and its format was modified in 2024. The program has partnered with prestigious local organizations such as the Atlas Performing Arts Center, CityDance Conservatory, and Dance Loft on 14th Steet to name a few. The program continues to present an annual joint showcase of choreographers entitled ICONS Reunited at the Atlas Performing Arts Center each spring. The next performance is tentatively scheduled totake place on May 10, 2025. Please stay tuned for more information coming up closer to the presentation date.
