CALIFORNIA: The 20th Annual Choreography Festival at the McCallum Theatre Institute will take place on November 10, 2018 in Palm Desert, California. Choreography by both emerging and established dance makers from across the nation will take center stage in McCallum’s popular festival. MASSACHUSETTS: The Yard at Martha’s Vineyard offers Offshore Creation Residencies of two to three weeks, emphasizing the collaborative nature of dance making. 2. Taking Flight -- Madonna set to direct a biopic by Michaela De Prince, dancer at The Dutch National Ballet:
Madonna will direct the MGM drama Taking Flight, based on the life of ballerina Michaela De Prince. DePrince is currently second soloist at the Dutch National Ballet. Film studio MGM has been developing Taking Flight since 2015, when it first bought rights to Michaela and Elaine DePrince’s memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina. The book follows Michaela DePrince’s life from an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone to a world-renowned ballerina.
“Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity,” Madonna said. “We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life.”
Madonna will direct from a screenplay by Camilla Blackett (“New Girl”). Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will produce alongside Ben Pugh and Guy Oseary. MGM Production President Jonathan Glickman and Tabitha Shick are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. A release date for the film has not been announced.

Rooted with Wings is a visual dance documentary that explores the work of internationally acclaimed choreographer and dancer Tero Saarinen, granting the viewer a unique impression of this extraordinary artist’s creative process. Featuring stunningly captured dance sequences and behind-the-scenes material from around the globe, the film brings to light how Saarinen’s dance works evolve from an idea or concept into a finished performance.
The film follows Saarinen over a five-year period from 2014 to 2018, through several premieres of new works and tours in Finland, France, Korea, Kenya and Japan, while bringing to light his approach to his life as a global nomad in dance. In a turbulent world fetishizing technology, change and constant online availability, Saarinen embraces a philosophy of awareness, presence in the moment and centered physicality.
