TRENDING:
Syrian choreographer Mithkal Alzghair creates Displacement to examine Syrian dance in the context of war, migration and revolution.
How does the dance body react when its movement is forced or prevented? Featuring three dancers, the work is defined by conflicting emotions: the hope of escaping versus the uneasiness of knowing that to return is impossible.
This poignant piece is also Alzghair’s investigation into the folklore of his homeland and how it has been shaped by its political reality. Drawing from traditional Syrian folk dances, he highlights the paradox of a deeply rooted culture, forced to migrate. Alzghair trained in Damascus and Montpellier, having fled to France to avoid military service.
In Displacement, he offers a striking reflection on the experience of fleeing and the uncertainty of life in exile. Displacement will be featured at the Dublin Dance Festival from May 18-28, 2017. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_VslEq2TFo

Two Documentaries about Syrian Dancer Amad Joudeh:
Until very recently, Syrian dancer Ahmad Joudeh was still holding dance classes for children in Damascus, Syria, among the rubble and the atrocities of war. In the summer of 2016, journalist Roozbeh Kaboly, from the Dutch news programme Nieuwsuur, made a documentary about Ahmad called Dance or Die. Watch Dance or Die, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqJQOMZCiwY&feature=youtu.be
This documentary has changed Ahmad’s life radically. On seeing the documentary, Dutch National Ballet’s Director Ted Brandsen decided to do something to help bring the Syrian dancer to the Netherlands. By setting up the fund Dance for Peace and through donations from private individuals, Ahmad Joudeh successfully made the journey to the Netherlands.
A second documentary that Nieuwsuur made shows Ahmad’s journey from Syria to the Netherlands and his experiences in his first weeks there. This documentary, Dance for Peace, was shown recently on Dutch television. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIk2vfl_Sz8&feature=youtu.be
On behalf of Ahmad, the Dance for Peace Fund was set up with the help of the Dutch National Ballet. The fund is intended to pay Ahmad’s study and maintenance expenses. All donations will go in full to Ahmad, to help him develop further as a dancer and choreographer. Donations can be transferred to account number NL03ABNA 0427590280, in the name of Dance for Peace.
Ahmad, born in 1990, grew up in the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus. He wanted to dance from a very early age. His father wouldn’t allow it, so he attended classes in secret. When his father found out, Ahmad was beaten. Once, he hurt his legs so badly that Ahmad couldn’t dance for a while. Despite everything, he kept on dancing. He trained at the Enana Dance Theatre and at the Dance Department of the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts, both in Damascus. From the age of 17, he gave ballet classes to children free of charge. In 2014, he was a contestant in the Arab version of So You Think You Can Dance.
NEW BOOKS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:
Chinese Dance: In the Vast Land and Beyond, by Lynn Frederiksen & Shih-Ming Li Chang
As a comprehensive resource, Chinese Dance offers students, scholars and choreographers an invaluable introduction to the subject. It serves as a foundation of common knowledge from which Chinese- and English-language communities can begin a cross-cultural conversation about Chinese dance. The chapter on Chinese dance history, along with an excellent glossary of key terms, gives English-language readers a chance to understand the development of Chinese dance as it is officially articulated by historians and dance scholars in Asia.
Through the online database of video clips, an extensive bibliography, and appendices, Chinese Dance provides a broad collection of primary source images, videos, and text that invite interactive and flexible engagement by a range of users. The collection of interviews with Chinese dance practitioners in North America offers a view into the Asian diaspora experience.
