ARIZONA: Company choreographers are invited to apply for the Wickenburg Residency with the opportunity to pursue new projects, mount work, or collaborate with other artists, free from everyday pressures. These residencies are intended for chamber dance companies. Previous dance companies have included American Ballet Theatre II and Northwest Dance Theatre. GEORGIA: The Department of Dance at Kennesaw State University invites two nationally-emerging or mid-career choreographers to apply for a four-week residency to create two world premieres on the KSU Dance Company. NEW YORK: Internationally acclaimed choreographer and Pacific Northwest Ballet’s first resident choreographer, Alejandro Cerrudo, brings It Starts Now, a silky, cerebral, and virtuosic work to The Joyce. It Starts Now is a capsule of life’s moments and a contemplation of the nonlinear nature of time. Cerrudo deconstructs the space of the theater in this dramatic, mind-bending world premiere. AUSTRIA: On September 25, 2021, the Austrian premiere of Swan Lake by Angelin Preljocaj will be performed. Star choreographer Angelin Preljocaj sets his multi-layered creation in a world that seems near enough to touch. His excellent ensemble is guided by Tchaikovsky’s familiar ballet music, which has been arranged into a highly dramatic score. FRANCE: Festival Le Temps d'Aimer la Danse Biarritz runs from September 11-20, 2021. This year marks the 31st edition of the festival. POLAND: “Youth Spirit of Dance” is a Polish-Japanese project that takes place on September 3 & 4, 2021. Devised by well-known Polish choreographers and danced to music by Polish composers, the project features 50 young Polish and Japanese dancers, including finalists of Young Dancer of the Year 2019, Prix de Lausanne, and Youth American Grand Prix, presenting Polish folk and national dances using a variety of techniques ranging from classical dance to tap-dance. 2) IMPRINTED, a film by JoAnna Mendl Shaw, chronicles the first moments of the life of two newborn foals and the genesis of an interspecies dialogue. Three Equus Projects dancers merge improvisation with natural horsemanship to bond with mares and their foals. This human-equine dance translates behavior into shared language and plays into choreographic dialogue.
This is a story about listening, compassion, and interspecies communication - themes that have powerful resonance in 2021, as the world emerges from a devastating pandemic.
