BOOKS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:

Nouvelle Histoire de la danse en Occident. By Laura Cappelle / With 27 international contributors, with a foreword by William Forsythe. Publisher: Editions du Seuil, 2020. French Language

Dance represents a real challenge for historians. An art of the ephemeral, it leaves only very partial traces in its wake once it has faded, and often continues to be forgotten in the tales of art history. In order to fill this gap, Laura Cappelle brought together twenty-seven of the best international specialists in western dance, whose work highlights over the long term, from Prehistory to the present day, a multiplicity of techniques and practices.

From the first signs of danced trances to the modern liberation of the body, from Renaissance ballets to current choreographic creation, this work deciphers movement in light of the social, cultural, and artistic dynamics that have shaped it in the West. The dance is contemporary, classical, Apollonian, Dionysian, political, aesthetic, popular; from the city to the stage, it blurs the boundaries and asserts both elevation and grounding, virtuosity and simplicity. An essential project for the results of research to nourish the general culture of dance as well as the understanding of works and practices today, this journey through history is aimed at all audiences.
