TRENDING: When Dancing is Being [Site-] Specific

When we enter any space, enclosed or outdoors, we experience and interact in various ways with the space surrounding us. A choreographer’s physical involvement, movement engagement and artistic response to particular non-proscenium dance spaces is widely known as a site-specific performance approach.

Moving and dancing in the interior of a gallery, a church, or a warehouse, all of which have determined purposes, may lead to vastly different kinesthetic engagement than dancing in a dance studio, a ballroom, or a disco club. A creative choreographic response might also emerge in smaller, confined spaces such as doorways, windows, and staircases. There are also open exterior locations to move and dance in, such as streets, plazas, railroads, train stations, and parks – small and large, local and national.

The choreographer’s engagement with a site and various improvised or structured approaches might result in making-sense of the site through dynamic attraction, interaction, integration, and collaboration among the space, the choreographer, the performers, and the observers.

As striking example and a artistic marker for outstanding work in this genres, we refer here to the choreographer Heidi Duckler, who over 37 years has created hundreds of site-specific works for her dance company> she recently was featured in the prestigious publication Fjord Review, link below: https://fjordreview.com/heidi-duckler-dance/?utm_source=The+Dance+Edit&utm_campaign=aadb0fff6b-TheDanceEdit20201119_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_71d672be74-aadb0fff6b-69727214

The film ends with a big, splashy, totally unexpected dance number  in a supermarket (Los Angeles Times). Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJblPY5hVHI

BOOKS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:

On Site: Methods for Site-Specific Performance Creation, by Stephan Koplowitz,  Oxford University Press, 2022. On Site: Methods for Site-Specific Performance Creation is a practical book for artists and students at all levels who create or are learning to create making sited dance works. Author Stephan Koplowitz covers specific, hands-on strategies for an array of issues to consider before, during, and after embarking upon a project, including site selection, procuring permits, designing the audience experience, researching and exploring a site for inspiration and content, differences in urban and natural environments, definitions of key production roles, building effective collaborations with artists, and techniques to generate site-inspired production elements such as sound/music, costumes, lighting, and media. He also offers helpful chapters on project budgeting, contract negotiation, fundraising, marketing, documentation, and assessment.

Based on the author's career spanning over 30 years of site-specific creation, the book also includes the voices of over 24 other artists, producers, and writers who share their perspectives and experiences on the many topics covered. A guide designed to make site work practical, intentional, and attainable, On Site will become a well-worn reference for anyone interested in the creative process and discovering the power of site-specific works.
